Wheelchair Spoke Guards Size Guide

Find your correct spoke protectors size in the chart below. If you are unsure which size fits your wheelchair, use our step-by-step measuring guide at the bottom of this page. The dimensions listed are based on the outer wheel diameter.

Tips:

  1. Your wheel size — you can usually find it printed on the side of the tyre.
  2. The correct spoke guard size — use the wheel size to determine which spoke guard diameter will fit your wheelchair.
  3. The inner cutout size — this is the opening in the centre of the spoke guard. It should be large enough to provide easy access to the wheel hub and its components.

Still Not Sure Which Size You Need?

If you're still unsure, don't worry — you can measure your wheel yourself in just a few minutes.

Tip: If your wheelchair has quick-release wheels, remove the wheel and lay it flat with the handrim side facing down, so the inner side of the wheel is facing up.

Spoke Guards WITHOUT Handrim Cutouts

Measure the distance between two opposite handrim mounting points, as shown in the picture. This measurement determines the correct outer diameter of your spoke guard.

✔ Use this method if you want a smooth outer edge without cutouts around the handrim mounts.

Tip: If you are measuring for a custom-size spoke guard, leave at least 2 mm (0.08 in) of clearance between the spoke guard and the handrim mounting points.

For example:

  • If the distance between the mounting points is 505 mm, choose a spoke guard with an outer diameter of 503 mm.

  • If the distance is 19.88 inch, choose a spoke guard with an outer diameter of approximately 19.80 inch.

Choosing a Mounting Method for Spoke Guards

The correct mounting method depends not only on the shape and design of the spoke guard, but also on the material from which it is made. Some mounting systems are suitable only for specific materials, spoke guard types or configurations.

For ready-made products in the BSP Shop, in 90% of cases the installation method is zip ties, as this is the most universal option. If you would like other types of mounting, please use the customizer.

The BSP Spoke Guard Customizer automatically takes all compatibility requirements into account. Once you have selected the material, shape and other options for your spoke guards, the customizer will display only the mounting methods that are compatible with your chosen configuration.

This means that you do not need to check the compatibility yourself. Simply choose one of the mounting methods available in the customizer.

Spoke Guards WITH Handrim Cutouts

Measure the distance across the two widest opposite handrim mounting points, as shown in the picture. This measurement determines the correct outer diameter of your spoke guard.

✔ Use this method if you want a spoke guard with cutouts around the handrim mounts.

Tip 1: If you are measuring for a custom-size spoke guard, leave at least 2 mm (0.08 in) of clearance.

For example:

  • If the distance across the widest mounting points is 522 mm, choose a spoke guard with an outer diameter of 520 mm.
  • If the distance is 20.55 inches, choose a spoke guard with an outer diameter of approximately 20.47 inches.

You may also choose a spoke guard that matches the measured diameter more closely. The space between the handrim mount and the cutout usually allows the spoke guard to overlap the wheel rim slightly if it is 1–2 mm larger, without affecting installation or the appearance of the wheel.

Tip 2: For custom spoke guards with handrim cutouts, please specify whether your handrim mounts are round or flat, as well as the number of handrim mounting points (4/6). This allows us to produce the correct cutout shape and positioning for a perfect fit.

Please note that pin mounting are not available for spoke guards with handrim cutouts.

This is because the handrim mounting brackets are not positioned in a standard location in relation to the wheel spokes. During wheel assembly, the handrim may be attached at different points, meaning that the position of the handrim brackets relative to the spokes is unique for each wheel.

Pin fixings require the pre-drilled holes in the spoke guard to align precisely with the wheel spokes. At the same time, the handrim cutouts must align with the handrim mounting brackets. Because these two positions vary independently, it is not possible to guarantee that both the pin holes and the handrim cutouts will align correctly.

For this reason, spoke guards with handrim mounting cutouts must be installed using a different fixing method.

Wheelchair Spoke Guards Bend Options

The spoke guard angle for each product is listed in the Specifications section of its product page.

Most standard BSP spoke covers available on our website come with a standard 8° bend, which fits the majority of wheelchair wheels.

Most BSP sports spoke guards are produced with an 11° angle by default.

If your wheelchair is equipped with a drum brake or has a steeper spoke angle due to an extended hub construction, you may require a deeper curve. In the customizer, you can select the maximum 11° bend, ensuring proper fit and reliable protection without interference.

Tips:

  1. Standard 8° bend — suitable for wheelchairs with a standard hub, without drum brakes or an extended hub.
  2. Maximum 11° bend — recommended if your wheelchair has drum brakes or an extended hub.

Choosing the Correct Central Cutout Diameter

The centre cutout provides easier access to the wheel hub. This is particularly useful for wheelchairs with quick-release wheels, as it allows you to reach the quick-release axle without removing the spoke guard.

Our standard centre cutout is 100 mm (3.94 inches). This size is suitable for around 90% of standard manual wheelchair wheels.

You can select a different centre cutout size when creating your spoke guards in the BSP Spoke Guard Customizer.

Tip: Do not make the cutout exactly the same size as the wheel hub. We recommend leaving some additional clearance around it. For example, if your hub has a diameter of 80 mm (3.15 inches), choose a centre cutout of at least 90 mm (3.54 inches).
